Madison, Wis. — Cleanup continues today following a major winter storm that hit much of Wisconsin over the weekend. Several locations set all-time records for snow amount. That included Appleton with 21.2”, Brillion with 18”, New London 23”, Oconto 29”, Shawano with 29.8” and Waupaca with 28.4” of snow.
Most of the snowfall has ended. The National Weather Service (NWS) is reporting that another storm will bring more snow and rain on Wednesday with central Wisconsin receiving 1-3” and possible icing in southern Wisconsin. At this time, the NWS is forecasting for later this week, mild temperatures during the day and below freezing temperatures at night which should slow the snowmelt.
Despite the heavy snow, snow plow crews did an excellent job in keeping roads plowed and opened. Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) reports that all main roads are now open, including U.S. Highway 2 which was closed by Ashland due to extreme weather conditions. DOT still encourages motorists to check out 511wi.gov before traveling.
The heavy, wet snow caused some damage to farms and businesses. Brown County had 14 businesses with reported roof collapse. No one was injured. Several counties reported farm building damage and roof collapse on barns due to the snow.
During the height of the storm, there were thousands across central and northern Wisconsin without power. However, utility crews were able to restore power quickly.
The State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC) was elevated to Level 4 over the weekend to monitor the storm. Late this afternoon, the SEOC returned to Level 5 with the State Duty Officer system. The state is working with county emergency management directors in gathering snow removal costs. There has been no request for state assistance.
